Freely in Hope (FIH) equips survivors and advocates to lead in ending the cycle of sexual violence. Based in Kenya, Zambia and South Africa, Freely in Hope provides holistic education, leadership development and storytelling platforms—allowing survivors to lead with their rewritten stories.
Freely in Hope is in search of an Operations & Development Director who is passionate about equipping survivors and advocates to lead in ending the cycle of sexual violence. The position will focus on strengthening operational management, building funding partnerships, and ensuring strategic impact to scale survivor-led programs. This is a full-time position to be based in Nairobi, Kenya.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
STRENGTHEN OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT
- Lead the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the small, yet growing organization of 3-7 people;
- Collaborate with the International Director to develop in-depth operational analysis to drive improvements;
- Develop and maintain highly detailed budgets and timely financial projections;
- Establish and maintain a highly capable team and monitor their performance against strategic initiatives;
- Conduct 360 Reviews and employee performance biannually;
- Provide guidance and support to the development of projects, programs, and proposals by asking key questions and ensuring programs and operations efficiently coalign;
- Provide overall support for leadership development of staff, protocol and compliance trainings, effectiveness, and contextualization to Kenya;
- Ensure compliance with country standards on Human Resources, Security, NGO requirements, and oversee contractors on audit and tax requirements;
- Ensure FIH services for beneficiaries are best in class, reflect national best practices, are cost effective and efficient, and provide an excellent customer service experience for FIH staff members, volunteers, beneficiaries;
- Anticipate potential bottlenecks, provide innovative solutions to troubleshoot challenges, and balance programmatic emergencies with technical constraints;
- Identify, assess, and inform the Executive Director and Board of Directors of internal and external issues that affect the organization;
BUILD FUNDING PARTNERSHIPS
- Collaborate with partner organizations to expand program reach, effectiveness and sustainability;
- Communicate with stakeholders, donors, and partners within Kenya to encourage local sustainability and to keep them informed in the work;
- Interact with potential and existing donors, articulate program objectives, develop funding proposals, create funding objectives, and meet fundraising targets;
- Act as an effective and relevant spokesperson for the organization;
- Partner with the Board of Directors to build financial self-sufficiency within Kenya through entrepreneurial efforts, grants, corporate giving, and individual investments;
- Create links with the wider target community as to be able to raise their awareness of FIH and foster ownership and participation in the program’s effectiveness and the community’s development.
ENSURE STRATEGIC IMPACT
- Be part of the global team to design and execute FIH’s growth strategy;
- Coordinate and implement relevant workshops, trainings, and gatherings with strategic partners of FIH to enhance our brand’s philosophy within other social, corporate, and faith sectors;
- Design and implement metric systems to monitor and evaluate all program activities and effectiveness;
- Be a part of team program management and design elements to strengthen the outcomes of program;
- Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization’s programs, services and projects to build capacity and strengthen sustainability;
- Work with community leaders and officials to influence institutional policies that pursue justice and prevent sexual violence;
- Work with program staff to create positive systematic change, foster leadership skills, promote holistic support and self-sufficiency, and encourage a culture that reflects the values of FIH.
- Operations guru. You have at least 4+ years experience working in operations for a global NGO or corporation, preferably in education, community development, and/or services for survivors of sexual violence.
- Team leader. You have worked at least 2 years at a management level or above and love shaping and developing processes and procedures that allow teams to work smarter and better.
- Strategic leadership. You are able to develop and communicate a shared vision for the organization’s work in equipping survivor leaders. You see the future of a violence-free world and have clear initiatives for how to get there.
- Monitoring and evaluation skills. You like asking tough questions and designing processes and gathering thorough information to answer them. You have demonstrated experience in program M&E.
- Writing & presentation skills. You have experience presenting at conferences and contributing in panel discussions. You can write simply about complex topics and teach others to do the same.
- Curiosity. You are good at asking questions and helping your team design programs that work best for their communities.
- Gravitas. Your commitment to operational excellence inspires others to have the same standards to further our mission. You’re able to remain calm in times of crisis, mitigate emergencies compassionately, and lead others toward unity.
- Collaborative spirit.You actively listen and coach team members to come into their own voice and leadership. - BA Degree in Education, Business, Law, Management, Human Resources etc. from a reputable institution.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
- Preferable additional diplomas, certificates or trainings related to legal advocacy, counseling, community development, gender-based violence, women’s issues, women’s health, leadership development, or education.
